“Brooklyn Queens Day”
Today
is Brooklyn Queens Day. All public schools are closed today. In 1905, the State
Legislature passed a law making the first Thursday in June an annual holiday
for the public schools of Brooklyn. This was to celebrate ‘The
founding of the Sunday school movement in Brooklyn’. 1905 is the first date
given for this holiday now Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott said it started in the
1800s.
In
1959 this school holiday was extended to Queens. A few years ago it has
been extended to all NY schools…
