When I was a child I found this prayer to be scary

Now I lay me down to sleep,~ I pray the Lord my soul to keep.~ If I die before I wake,~ I pray the Lord my soul to take.
Now I wake to see the light,~ Tis God has kept me through the night.~ And now I lift my voice to pray~ That He will keep me through the day.
