“Secrets Hurt So Bad”
In order to make sure it remains a secret, you have to lie. I met a man who told me that for many years he believed that the woman he grew up with was his mother and her children were his siblings. He eventually found out that one of his so-called sisters was actually his mother.
When his mother got pregnant with him, she was sent away to the country to have the baby. When she returned with him, his grandparents told her that she must tell everyone that he was her brother and she was never to mention his father. His father didn’t even know he had a son.
Twenty-two years later, he met his father, but he didn’t know that the man was~ His father was also his girlfriend’s father~

“Handling Stories”
My attitude at handling stories, and I mean stories as we say it in Trinbago meaning “lies”~ I sit back and watch the liars outplay themselves~ While I am waiting, I am hoping that they would just tell me the truth because I already know it~ The most hurtful thing is that in most cases, the story teller is always someone I love…

“They Called Him Stupid”
His male friends laughed at him~ His female friends loved him, wishing that he had chosen them~
At a tender age when the women in his life thought he wasn’t looking~ he was and he saw~
His mother cry~ His father did it!
His aunt cry~ His uncle did it!
His cousin cry~ Her boyfriend did it!
The neighbor cry~ Her husband did it!
He promised himself not to make his woman cry~
His male friends called him stupid~
He said, “Not just stupid~ Stupidly happy…

“Life Goes On Without A Hitch”
So I don’t have a kettle and a toaster…hmm~ I have had more than six kettles in my life time, I forget them on the stove and they burn~ Someone told me that I should get an electric kettle that has an auto shutoff~ Hmm, I say again, because in my hands, some kind of accident will take place and it is going to receive the same fate like the others~ I had a Combination Microwave Oven & Toaster~ I loved it~ loved it~~~~ loved it~ It worked faithfully for more than twelve years~ One day, the toaster died~ then days later the microwave passed away~ Oh drama, was my husband and children’s feelings, but for me~ I will deal with it~ The bread/waffles that didn’t toast in the toaster I put on the tawa/platen to toast~ It came out real good, so I am thinking that part of our life is covered~ The food heated on the stove/oven~ It heated real good~ Now I was thinking that everything was fine and life is going to go on with out a problem~ But then the complaints about a microwave went on day in and day out~ I on the other hand kept saying, “What’s the big deal? Just put your food in the frying pan –rice on one side, vegetables/beans/peas next to it along with the meat/fish~ Cover the frying pan and turn the fire down on low~ In ten minutes, your food is steaming~ I am looking at my husband and children faces as I am saying this~ Their look was heavenly because they looked as though they were say are we back in time? I wanted to laugh~ My husband said, “You’re not serious?” Three against one, I lost so we got the microwave~ Still no kettle and toaster~ Life is going on without a hitch and I am loving it until the complaints start about the toaster and kettle…

"Thunder storm"
The first thunder storm rolled by this morning and it was bad~ Here comes another~ The weatherman said that this one is going to be worst~ tornado~ High winds~ hail~ I am not looking forward to it~

“I Am Grateful”
We are expecting a vicious thunder storm this morning~ The area is becoming dark, but I am grateful for seeing another day~ I don’t know what you are faced with, but it’s a beautiful morning~ You are reading this so your mental faculties are unbroken~
If you have a compassionate person in your life~ Cherish them!

“Hurtful”
Yes, I know that they bring balance to the world~
Yes, I know this world is made-up of all kinds of people~
Yes, I know that we have to live among them~
Yes, I know that there is no rule that says that we are supposed to be close to them~
But I still wonder why so many people are so~~~~
Hurtful~
Upsetting~
Ruthless~
Tactless~
Fixated-on-evil~
Unkind~
Loathsome~

“It Annoys You”
Just imagine every time you ask one particular person in your life their opinion, they are always right~ It annoys you, but you would still ask again and again, never do what they suggested, then something goes wrong~ Now you are angry that the opinion giver was right again~ You may or may not tell them what happened because you dislike them~ Although they don’t blow-their-own-horn with –I-told-you-so, you still detest them~
Days turn into weeks even into months and you would suck it up and ask them their opinion again, but you would do the opposite…

You believe in what you believe in, but do not let your belief allow you to be~ Disrespectful~ Rude~ Impolite~ Bad-mannered~ Discourteous~ Insolent~ Ill-mannered~ Impertinent~ I can go on and on about some people state of mind…

“Lethal Words”
When I hear some lethal words coming from another person’s mouth, I wonder if I am at the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time~
I don’t know if Trinbago’s land lines still cross up, but years ago you could take up your phone and hear other people chatting~
One day, I heard a woman voice~ As I was about to let her know the lines were crossed, she said, “I hate her and I wish she dies!”
My blood crawled from hearing those lethal words, but I decided to listen to the rest of this conversation, because I wanted to know who these characters were~
“Don’t say that. It is not a good thing to wish bad for people.”
“I don’t care! I hate her.”
“Why? She didn't do anything to you. She is not the one who told you to have an affair with her husband. He approached you and you agreed, so live with it.”
“I want him for myself!”
And I wanted to say that I am anxiously waiting to make my call, would the both of you get off the damn phone, but I kept listening.
“You’ve been with him for three years and he says many degrading things about his wife to you, but he’s not divorcing her.”
“He told me that he filed the papers and she doesn’t want to sign it.”
“He is not speaking the truth.”
“He doesn’t lie to me. I believe him.”
Now, I am pissed because I want to use the blasted phone. I decided to get these blabbermouths off the phone so I said, “Just last-night…”
“Hello!” One exclaimed.
I did not answer~ Laughter was going to overcome me and I had to take deep breaths to stay focus.
“Hello! I know someone is listening! Who the hell are you?”
“Yes, someone is listening to your bullshit!”
“You to damn farse! (Nosy) This is none of your damn business!”
“You made it my business when you decided to spill it on the phone! Now, you listen to me! Just last night, I was talking to her and she said that she was wondering if to show you the divorce papers that he refused to signed!” Silence~ “Hello!” I shouted~ “Silence, then dial tone~ Now I could make my call…”

Let not your heart be troubled
Nor fear your soul dismay,
There is a wise Defender
And He will be your stay.
Where you have failed, He conquers,
See, how the foeman flies!
And all your tribulation
Is turned to glad surprise.

If for a while it seemeth
His mercy is withdrawn,
That He no longer careth
For His wandering child forlorn,
Doubt not His great compassion,
His love can never tire,
To those who wait in patience
He gives their heart's desire.(Heidi Chapter 17)

“From The Heart”
I don’t like gifts because I believe that most people give gifts to sing praises to themselves~ They tell Tom, Dick and Harry~ Janet, Jane and Joanne~ Those people might not be enough so they have to tell John, James, and Mike, even Lisa, Mary and Teresa~ In the long run, they’re going to tell everyone who would listen~ I have dealt with many of those blabbermouths so I decided not to accept gifts from anyone other than my immediate family~
“Blessed is the giver~ Grateful is the receiver~” Acts 20:35
A dear friend told me that she was going to buy something for me and she wanted to know the color I wanted. I told her don’t buy me anything because I don’t like gifts~
She said, “When something is given to you from the heart, you should be grateful, otherwise you are blocking the giver’s blessing.” …

“Love Candy”
My daughter wrote the Regents exam and her score was in the 80s in English so I asked her what about the missing percents?
She looked at me straight in the eye and said, “The topic for the essay was stupid~ The topic should have been, “Candy”
“CANDY!” I exclaimed
“I love candy and I have so much to say about it! I am sure I would have gotten 100%.!”

“Thunder Storm”
It started off a little more than 80ºF~ As the day progressed we went up to 100ºF~ Now, the temperature is 96ºF. It is dropping~ That means hot and cold don’t mix~ We are going to be faced with thunderstorm number umpteen, and I am not looking forward to that.

“The Smell Of Garlic Lingers”
For breakfast, I diced two heads of garlic (all the cloves) and 8 red plum tomatoes~
In a frying pan, I heated three table spoon of olive oil then added garlic~ Fried until golden brown then added diced tomatoes~ Fried tomatoes until brown~ While the tomatoes were frying, I slightly toasted Italian bread, put slices of mozzarella cheese in bread then topped it with some fried tomatoes~ For my husband and son, but I ate the tomatoes without mozzarella cheese~
After breakfast I brushed my teeth and I also gargled with mouthwash because I know how the smell of garlic lingers, on your breath~
My daughter got up half an hour after we all ate~ She said morning to her father and brother, but did not have a problem~ When she came to me, said good morning and kissed me on my cheek she whispered, “Did you eat garlic?”
“Yes, but I brushed my teeth!”
“I smell garlic on your breath.”
My husband and son heard us, so they both said that they smelt my garlic breath~
“So why didn’t you guys say something?” I asked.
“You’re not going anywhere so it was no big thing,” My husband said.
“True,” said my son.
My husband then said, “If you were going out I would have told you to chew a piece of brown paper, it might kill the garlic smell~ I know that chewing it kills the smell of alcohol from your breath…

“I Don’t Want To Go”
When I was a child, I acted like a child so I did immature things. On one occasion after I had my irresponsible moment, someone said to me, “Look what you did! Just go to hell!”
Oh no not Hell –Gehenna… hmm. that is one place I know that I don’t want to go. The heat wave that I experience in the US does not compare, but it keeps reminding me why I don’t want to go to hell~
Emphasis is placed upon that fact this week~ It is going to be HOT! HOT! HOT! Oh what the~ JESUS!

“My Living”
Three friends of mine who don’t know each other said to me on different occasions, “Every time I speak, to you, you always make me laugh.” I said, “Thanks”, but what they did not know is that although I brought joy to them my day might not have been a joy-filled one. One thing I don’t do is spread gloom and doom~ SO
Every time I speak to you and I inspire you~
Every time I do something and it makes you laugh or Smile~
As the song says~~~~ Then my living shall not be in vain…

Yes, my intuition~ my feelings~ my hunches are always paying attention when you LIE~

One winter day I was walking with a friend through 14th Street Union Square, dressed in a black wool coat~ I was stepping tall in my 4inches pumps just feeling like I owned the world~ Actually showing off that I was feeling and looking good~ then I felt something hit my left shoulder~ I looked over and a white splatter of feces from a pigeon was on my black coat…

“Another Day Of Salivating”
Every Thursday morning, her mother goes grocery shopping and she would take her along. When they arrived at the supermarket (It did not matter if it was raining), she always stood her at the right side away from the entrance then she would say to her, “Stand right here and wait for me.” She would stand quietly, looking at her entering the supermarket and taking a shopping cart. A feeling of nervousness and hurt always came over her, but she did not say anything. Many people walked by~ Some would smile and say hello, but others had a look that say, “I hate little children.” Every now and then, cars would drive along the main road in opposite directions. Standing there was always boring, so her eyes usually scanned the area. It would finally stop on the lady who was at her left side. This lady sat on a bench and in front of her was a table with a small glass case on it. In the case was pink and white sugar cakes, pink and white fudge, coconut fudge, toulum, coconut drops and red and white peppermint sticks. Her mother never bought anything from the lady, but she was hoping that this time she would. Oh, how she salivated~ The time was going slowly and she kept looking at the glass case. Her mother finally came out of the grocery and she ignored the lady~ They went home with the groceries and no goodies from the glass case.~
This was another day of salivating, but she was hoping that the next Thursday she would get something from the case…

“I Remember”
On a drought filled July, the water authority was conserving water so water was limited in some areas. One moonlit night, most of the children in the village that I grew up in, went to the elementary school that we attended to get water. The only light we had was from the full moon, but it was a beautiful night with a nice breeze blowing~ The trade winds was just what the night needed after the hot~ hot~ humid day we had.
I was about 5 years old and I was given a big Klim pan that my father had put two holes on the top and a piece of wood to make a handle. Most of the children around my age had the same kind of pan, but the older children had buckets.
I left home with my brothers and sisters, but they all walked ahead of me, so did all of the other big children. Us younger ones were walking as fast as we could. The bigger ones were able to reach the school, full their buckets then started walking back home~ passing us. When we finally got to the school, we had to wait for a free pipe to fill our pans. After we all filled them, we headed home. All the children in our group were about my age or younger. We walked carefully, talking about this-and-that and laughing at our jokes~ Just enjoying the carefree life we were living. Halfway of our journey our brothers and sisters passed us as they made their second trip to the school. As my big sister walked by me she said, “When you get home, stay, don’t come back.”
I asked my friends if they were coming back, they said that they were. I decided that I was not going to miss out on this fun-filled time I was having. I was going to ignore her demand so I said, “Come on guys, let’s walk faster.” We arrive at our homes, emptied our water into the barrels. I made sure my parents did not hear or see me as I quietly walked out of the yard, ran to meet my friends~ We set off for the school...

Happy July 4, 2012

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The American Dream
Delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, on 4 July 1965.
I planned to use for the textual basis for our thinking together that passage from the prologue of the book of Job where Satan is pictured as asking God, "Does Job serve thee for nought?" And I’d like to ask you to allow me to hold that sermon ["Why Serve God?"] in abeyance and preach it the next time I am in the pulpit in order to share with you some other ideas.
